Dreaming of the 'Spirit of the Spey'

David Staume - Friday, February 12, 2021

February Whisky of the Month – Balvenie Doublewood 12 year old single malt - reviewed by Committee Member, Tattersalls paddler, and Erg class regular Martin McConnell.

The spirit of the Spey is held down a stretch of Scotland’s fastest flowing river, where distilleries dot the banks, including the distiller of this month’s Whisky of the Month, Balvenie.

The dream of plunging a paddle into the majestic Spey is still a distant reality. However, the smell of the honey-coloured liquid tells a story of tradition and an aroma of sherry mixed with the sweetness of the remote Speyside hills. The first taste produces a powerful explosion on the palate whilst the honey-like texture glides the liquid to its destination. A whisky to drink “neat” after a long week whilst dreaming of kayaking on the river Spey and sampling the many distilleries along its banks.

Thanks to Martin for taking the time to review our Whisky of the Month!
