Whisky expertise not necessary; a review from Mario and Esmond

Tattersalls Club - Saturday, March 07, 2020

There are 142124 types of whiskies, 1501 distilleries and 6155 brands, so it is fair to say that whisky is a dark art, an alchemy that relies on innumerable variables: from the mash to the barrel, all the way down to the glass that you drink from.

It is also because of these variables that, despite the many training courses and tastings that Mario and Esmond have had, they can still get off-track sometimes and get their palate completely wrong.

This is a perfect example why we urge all Members to join the Tattersalls Whisky Club. Be you a beginner, ardent or devotee, the Whisky Club is for all genres of whisky lovers and it is an opportunity for you to not be afraid and have some fun with your fellow Members.

Our Whisky of the Month is Dahlwinnie Winter's Gold. Here are our tasting notes as follows:

Mario:

Colour

18-carat gold, hoping this whisky tastes just as expensive!

Nose

Bitter orange and marmalade, as if ready to spread onto Es' morning toast

Palate

Tastes like star anise, very liquorice-like flavour

Water

Now I'm getting brown sugar flavour, how weird

Finish

Very short finish, wish there was more!

Esmond:

Colour

I saw the colour and it reminded me of the Golden Snitch (You're a wizard Harry!)

Nose

I thought I could smell peat but maybe it was just figs?!?

Palate

Taste of stone fruits levitating all around me

Water

I think I added too much water cause all I can taste is honey

Finish

Short like Professor Flitwick

The Whisky Club is to entertain and educate all the whisky lovers that are involved. So don't be afraid, make the mistakes, have some fun and enjoy your first dram or other notable trailblazers.
