It’s been 25 years since Sydney was ignited by the Olympic Torch that lit up a stadium and a country. Only a few races stood the test of time and prevailed in the history books of Australian sport, and one of them was the Men’s 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay. Last Friday, the Tattersalls Club had the honour of hosting Michael Klim, Ashley Callus, Chris Fydler and Ian Thorpe for a rare and intimate reunion. This was an event so unique that Chris Fydler stated, “The last time we were all in a room together was 10 years ago.”

Starting the event, Olympic rival James Hickman offered his perspective on the race and the unforgettable atmosphere that Australia created for each competitor. Hickman set the tone, and like the race, the Australians swooped in and took over.

Complemented by delicious food cooked by Chef Fernando and served with premium drinks, each Olympian was asked several questions by former Olympian Matthew Abood to discuss their upbringing, challenges, and their experience on the day.  Many great stories were shared as a captivated Tattersalls audience engaged in a Q&A with the Olympians, exploring both scientific and sentimental concepts and memories.

As the day came to an end, members were treated to one last hurrah with the official race being played for everyone to relive that special moment from 25 years ago. The same cheers from 25 years ago got to live one more time in the Dining Room, showcasing the same camaraderie and passion our Olympians displayed that day.

A special thanks to Chris Fydler and our Athletic Department Manager, Malcolm Turnbull, for organising this special event that resonated with many of us. Thanks to all the Olympians who spoke on the day, and to Matt Abood for MCing this event.

We hope to see you again for the Annual Athletic Department Luncheon next year.
