Property: Untangling the Knot

This time last year, the Business Forum After Dark convened on so-called Liberation Day when the world woke up to the US tariff announcements. A year on, the topic was property, and the timing was once again red hot.

Property is probably the biggest economic riddle in Australia right now. Our entire banking system and the broader economy rest on the housing market – but right now, almost everything that touches it is under pressure.

Against that backdrop, a packed dining room gathered to wrestle with the big issues and share perspectives under the Chatham House Rule.

A full dining room, an expert panel, and a topic with real national consequences made for the kind of conversation the Business Forum does best: informative, occasionally spicy – but always friendly and fun.

The evening’s highlight was the expert panel moderated by Tommy Lim, with members and Forum regulars Lexi Airey, Oliver Quach, and Ben Hendriks kicking off a lively discussion followed by audience Q&A.

Tommy led the panel in a wide-ranging conversation about the supply-and-demand forces driving Australia’s property conundrum.  Then the rest of the audience jumped into a lively conversation.

The evening was a reminder of how much expertise we have in the Club and in the Business Forum. Between the panel and the audience experts, the room was full of ideas.

The answer to the property conundrum was….  It’s complicated! However, everyone in the room headed to the Members Bar next door with their brains full of new knowledge and insights into the factors in play.

If you’re interested in business, the economy and geopolitics, you’d enjoy the Business Forum breakfast. We will be discussing budget leaks and predictions with some industry insight prior to the release of this year’s budget. It’s every 6 weeks and the next one is on Tuesday 05 May at 07:15, so why not come along for coffee, breakfast and a great briefing.

Thank you team for arranging the night, to our amazing staff for the excellent service and steaks, to Tommy Lim for his masterclass in moderation, and of course to our panel Lexi, Ollie, and Ben for sharing so generously.
