The winners of the 2022 Halliday Awards were all outstanding, but Yarra Yering was the first winery to ever win two major awards, claiming both Winery and Wine of the Year.

Located in Yarra Valley in Victoria, Yarra Yering is one of the oldest and most beautiful vineyards with 28 hectares of vines located at the foot of the Warramate Hills. Sarah Crowe was appointed winemaker after the 2013 vintage. She has made red wines of the highest imaginable quality right from her first vintage in 2014.

Their pinot noir, chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, and shiraz are produced successfully as single varietals and in blends. The low-yielding, unirrigated vineyards have always produced wines of extraordinary depth and intensity. Crowe was drawn to Yarra Yering by the appeal of making cool climate shiraz because she believes that Yarra Valley shiraz is a bit of a hidden gem. It’s only about eight percent of what is grown in the region, so it can be a bit overlooked by shiraz lovers. They don’t quite require the lengthy cellaring that shiraz wines often do, but most importantly, their compost program helps retain the soil moisture throughout summer.

And it was the Light Dry Red No.1 that took out Wine of the Year – a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, and petit Verdot. The first plantings at Yarra Yering into block No.1 were these cabernet & malbec vines and the name was born.

Thanks to Des, we have been very lucky to secure four different grape & vintage releases that we have secretly stashed away. Just ask Muzz and Ezzy which of the four releases they have hidden away.
