Our Club welcomed a full house on 19 October Wednesday night for a fascinating insight into two iconic Australian family businesses.
Led by the entertaining Andrew Coorey, over 60 Members and their Guests had the daunting task of selecting beer or wine as the perfect match for five dishes ranging from a not-so-humble oyster with apple and kafir lime to delicious lemon meringue.
Andrew Cooper (sixth generation) selected a wide range of flavours to match Chef Fernando’s degustation. Using the full Coopers portfolio, Andrew started with the classic Dry lager and went strong with the Vintage Ale before settling on the toasted malt of the Best Extra Stout.
Even with this diverse range of flavours, he was no match for the Patricia range presented by Katherine Brown (fourth generation) who delivered only the finest of the Brown Family portfolio and was the resounding winner with a 5 – 0 result, being much tighter than it appeared.
“It was a terrific night in the Club, fascinating to hear the tales of these iconic Australian multigenerational businesses from two of the current custodians”- Mark Roufeil.
“A warm and hearty congratulations to all who contributed to last night’s Grape vs Grain dinner held at the club. Under the steady guidance of chief Tatts MC Andrew Coorey, both Katherine Brown and Andrew Cooper told tales of their respective family businesses and how they came to be stalwarts in the Australian liquor landscape.
“Beautifully paired with food from Chef Fernando it was clear that this was not a competition between grain and grape but rather an example of how best to enjoy a meal – with good drink and great company. But if I had to pick one of each I would lean toward the Coopers Vintage Ale and the Brown Brothers Patricia Shiraz. And the rest of them in between to cleanse the palette.”- Luke Brbot.
“I thought that the Grape vs Grain function last night was outstanding. Congratulations to the staff and chef for excellent food and service!” Chris Pearson
