June Book Club Meeting: The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

If you’ve ever tuned into the UK gameshow Pointless, you may recognise the unmistakably tall Richard Osman. Best known as the co-host of the popular British quiz show and a familiar face on UK television, Osman has successfully turned his hand to writing, publishing a string of bestselling novels since 2020, including this month’s Book Club focus, The Thursday Murder Club.

The book follows four retirees: Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron, who live in Coopers Chase, a peaceful, upscale retirement village in the English countryside. While their peers might be content with jigsaw puzzles and knitting, this eclectic quartet prefers something a little more macabre. Every Thursday, they meet in the Jigsaw Room to review unsolved murder cases from old police files, using their varied backgrounds to piece together clues.

Using their deceptive innocence as a superpower, the group outmanoeuvres the local police, charms its way into crime scenes, and extracts secrets that people have spent decades hiding. As the body count rises and the investigation deepens, the group realises that the killer might be closer than they think, and that everyone, including members of their own community, is harbouring dark secrets.
