Friday 12 June from 18:00 in the Dining Room. Cost $125 Members and $135 Guests (includes dinner and wine)

Join Professor Michael Milgate for a night built around one grape, great food, and a milestone worth celebrating, his 60th birthday. The format is simple: five flights, each one a stop on a journey through the world of Pinot.

The evening departs with a glass of Blanc de Noir Champagne, your pre-boarding drink before the journey begins in earnest.

Flight 1 — Pinot Blanc & Pinot Gris The first leg takes us through the aromatic whites of the Pinot family. Tiefenbrunner Merus 2022, Brokenwood 2017, Hugel 2010 Grossi Laüe, and Poppies 2024, plus a mystery old world white to ease you into the journey. Stone fruit, citrus, and a bit of texture.

Flight 2 — Australian Pinot Noir We touch down in Australia, Corduroy 2020 Pedro’s, Petrichor 2020 Tea Tree Vineyard, Whisson Lake 2017 Piccadilly Valley, and Kooyong 2019 Haven. A look at what local producers are doing with this tricky grape, and doing well.

Flight 3 — International Pinot Noir The journey heads abroad, High Garden 2020 and Dicey 2021 Black Rabbit from Central Otago, Zena Crown 2021 from Oregon’s Willamette Valley, and a mystery new world red from an unlikely old world grape. Red fruit, savoury edges, and fine tannins throughout.

Flight 4 — The Heavy Hitters Our highest altitude stop. Bodega Chacra 2019 Treinta y Dos (Argentina), Oraterra 2023 (Martinborough), Domaine des Perdrix 2021 Échezeaux Grand Cru, and Faiveley 2020 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru. The Burgundy grands crus alone make this leg of the journey worth the ticket.

Flight 5 — Dessert Pinot Gris Every great journey deserves a smooth landing. Greywacke 2023 Botrytis and Poppies 2024 Late Picked bring things to a close, honeyed, lively, and just sweet enough to send you home happy.

Throughout the journey, a duck-focused dinner has been designed to sit alongside each flight rather than compete with it. And there’s a surprise gift waiting for one lucky passenger on the night.
