SUMMARY:Finding Sanity: A Literary Lunch with Greg de Moore\, the Story About the Australian Who Changed Mental Health Forever
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 18 June from 12:00 in the Dining Room\nCost: $68 per person (includes 2-course lunch and a drink). \nWith seats filling up quickly\, members are invited to enjoy a special lunch with Greg de Moore\, co-author of Finding Sanity\, who will share the remarkable story behind one of Australia’s most significant yet little-known medical breakthroughs. \nFinding Sanity: John Cade\, Lithium and the Taming of Bipolar Disorder explores the life and work of Dr John Cade\, the Australian psychiatrist whose discovery of lithium in 1948 transformed the treatment of manic depression and revolutionised modern psychiatry. Working largely in isolation after returning from years as a prisoner of war\, Cade made the first major pharmacological breakthrough in mental health treatment\, a discovery that remains the gold standard for bipolar disorder today. \nIt is a compelling story of perseverance\, innovation and compassion. Through meticulous research and vivid storytelling\, Greg de Moore brings to life a man whose contribution to medicine changed countless lives\, yet whose name remains largely unknown outside medical circles. \nOver lunch and a glass of wine\, Greg will discuss the inspiration behind the book\, the research that uncovered Cade’s story\, and why this chapter of Australian medical history continues to resonate today. \nWith the event now just days away\, places are filling quickly. If you have read the book or simply enjoy hearing extraordinary stories told by the people who uncover them\, this is an event not to miss! \nIf you would like to join\, please register by clicking the button below. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Chess Club Is Back! Can You Solve This Puzzle?
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 24 June from 18:00 to 20:00 in the Members Bar. \nMany of our Chess players are just like you! Many are inspired by the Queens Gambit and love problem-solving; others bask in heritage shared by the Club and grew up with the story of Kings and Queens. This month\, we are looking to grow our Chess sub club and encourage like-minded individuals to the board. If you have enjoyed our chess puzzles\, then this evening is for you! \nIt doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced player or looking to learn the game in a welcoming environment\, all members are invited to take part in a social evening of chess. The night will begin with a selection of chess puzzles before members settle in for casual games throughout the evening. \nMembers are also encouraged to enjoy the Club’s weekly pizza and pasta night while playing\, making for a great evening of food and friendly competition. \nIf you would like to join the next Chess Club\, please click the button below. \nHint for the Puzzle: Think French Words! \n\nClick here to find out the answer!\nToday we explore the term of En passant\, translating to In passing. Firstly\, we notice two Black Rooks on our back tiles that can checkmate on their next move. This means as White\, we must find a checkmate on our first move. Here we take the White Bishop on A8 and place it on E4. The only defence black has here is the Black Pawn on F7 to F5 to block check. Now\, here is where the En Passant comes into play. If a Black Pawn moves two moves at once in front of a White Pawn\, the White Pawn is allowed to take the Black pawn\, this is known as En Passant. So we use this play\, and our White Pawn on G6 will take the Black Pawn and end up on F6. This now allows the White Bishop to checkmate the Black King\, as the White Rook is covering the 8 row. \n\nRegister Now

SUMMARY:June Book Club Meeting: The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 30 June from 17:30 in the Members Bar. \nIf you’ve ever tuned into the UK gameshow Pointless\, you may recognise the unmistakably tall Richard Osman. Best known as the co-host of the popular British quiz show and a familiar face on UK television\, Osman has successfully turned his hand to writing\, publishing a string of bestselling novels since 2020\, including this month’s Book Club focus\, The Thursday Murder Club. \nThe book follows four retirees: Elizabeth\, Joyce\, Ibrahim and Ron\, who live in Coopers Chase\, a peaceful\, upscale retirement village in the English countryside. While their peers might be content with jigsaw puzzles and knitting\, this eclectic quartet prefers something a little more macabre. Every Thursday\, they meet in the Jigsaw Room to review unsolved murder cases from old police files\, using their varied backgrounds to piece together clues. \nUsing their deceptive innocence as a superpower\, the group outmanoeuvres the local police\, charms its way into crime scenes\, and extracts secrets that people have spent decades hiding. As the body count rises and the investigation deepens\, the group realises that the killer might be closer than they think\, and that everyone\, including members of their own community\, is harbouring dark secrets. \nThe Thursday Murder Club is a witty\, heartwarming and gripping mystery that proves you should never\, ever underestimate a retiree. Arguably\, Osman’s books are as good as his shows! This is a Book Club meeting you won’t want to miss. \nWant to join the next Book Club?
