In the heart of South Australia’s Eden Valley, where rolling hills catch the morning mist and
ancient gums whisper stories of time, the Henschke family has cultivated more than vines
they have cultivated a legacy.
2023 Harry’s Seven Shiraz and 2024 Peggy’s Hill Riesling are not merely wines; they are
living echoes of a family’s deep connection to the land and its history. Each bottle is a
tribute to the people whose names they bear and the soil that nourishes them.
Harry’s Seven Shiraz – The Spirit of a Pioneer
The 2023 vintage of Harry’s Seven Shiraz carries the weight of resilience and the charm of
an untamed vision. Named in honour of Harry Henschke, one of the seven children of
fourth-generation winemaker Louis Henschke, this wine is a salute to family, fortitude, and
the quiet strength of tradition.
Harry was not a man who sought the limelight, but he understood the land. He worked the
rows of vines with diligence and humility, often with his six siblings by his side. “Harry’s
Seven” is both a nod to his part in the seven-sibling legacy and to the old vine Shiraz blocks
that were nurtured under his watch. The 2023 vintage was shaped by a cooler growing
season, offering a Shiraz of elegance: black cherry and plum folded into fine tannins,
underscored by whispers of spice and eucalyptus, the scent of Eden Valley in a bottle.
Peggy’s Hill Riesling – The Grace of Elevation
Just a few ridges away lies Peggy’s Hill, a high point overlooking the valley floor, where the
air is crisp and the soils speak in limestone and quartzite. The 2024 Peggy’s Hill Riesling
comes from this elevated site, named for a spirited local midwife known simply as Peggy,
who brought generations into the world with steady hands and a kind heart.
This wine, made from Eden Valley’s prized high-altitude vineyards, is a celebration of purity
and precision, like the woman herself. The 2024 vintage, cool and long-ripening, brings a
Riesling that is shimmering in clarity: fresh lime, green apple, and flinty minerality,
wrapped in a razor-sharp acidity that promises both immediate refreshment and long aging
potential.
A Legacy Bottled
Together, Harry’s Seven Shiraz and Peggy’s Hill Riesling tell the story of Henschke not just
as a winery, but as a lineage rooted in people and place. Six generations have shaped the
estate since Johann Christian Henschke planted his first vines in the 1860s. Today,
Stephen and Prue Henschke, with their children, carry the mantle forward, blending
tradition with innovation, and respect with reinvention.
Every bottle from Henschke is a quiet promise: that good wine is not made in haste, but in
harmony with land, with history, and with heart
