Set against the backdrop of post-Revolutionary Russia, A Gentleman in Moscow brings a remarkable period of history vividly to life through the story of Count Alexander Rostov, who is sentenced to lifelong house arrest within Moscow’s grand Hotel Metropol. Though written in recent years, the novel possesses the charm and elegance of a classic. Rich in historical detail, it is ultimately a celebration of life, exploring dignity under pressure, identity, purpose, and the enduring power of friendship found in the most unexpected places. The Metropol itself becomes a character in the story – its restaurants, corridors, hidden rooms, and suites providing the stage upon which decades of Soviet history quietly unfold. The novel has since been adapted into a television series starring Ewan McGregor, available on Paramount+ and SBS On Demand. Book Club average score: 8/10. The trophy for Best Review goes to: “Hospitable Hotel Hostage.”
