A “Spooky, Eerie, Fun” or “Boring As Bats” read – depending on your perspective! Our group gave the book a solid 7/10, and the discussion about it, we gave a 9/10. We explored how the supernatural fits naturally into Victorian society and the dangers of being too polite within it, touching on delusion, sexuality, medical innovation (and what it can’t protect against – vampires), the spread of empire and its risks, religion, and the cutting-edge communication technologies of the late 1800s. A diverse cast (by Victorian standards) traversed bravely in the hunt for Dracula, ultimately seeking freedom and peace, for human souls and for vampires, freed from their own restlessness at the last breath.

It was a lovely way to wrap up our last Book Club meeting of the year, enjoying drinks and nibbles together. For anyone who loves a good read, or a lively discussion about arguably great books, we can’t wait to see you in 2026!

Overall score 7/10
