In 1983 Michael McCormack (Member of over 50 years) took out the inaugural Sports Person of the Year award. It has been hotly contested ever since.
Our 2022 Sports Person of the year winner was not only the February Member of the month but was also a part of the Dream Team who won the July nomination.
Two and a half years ago Guy Farrow went through a full shoulder reconstruction. His arm was strapped to his body and couldn’t be moved for four weeks. After eight intense weeks he was allowed to lift a one kilo dumbbell.
It was a bleak outlook for the former University of Hawaii star, but he wasn’t fazed and took it all in his stride, knowing himself well enough to know he would be back and better than ever.
Guy has been through the wars to get to where he is today.
He is now a national recorder holder in two disciplines in the pool. He completed his double records earlier this month setting a new national record in the 25m freestyle in a time of 11.92 seconds (taking 1.3 seconds off the previous record) and the 50m freestyle in a scintillating 25.59 seconds (taking nearly 1 second of the previous best time). These two times guaranteed Guy first place in both events, meaning he is two time record holder and two time gold medalist.
We have always known Guy had the ability, but what makes these swims so much better is the determination and drive he showed with his rehab and strength training months. It’s always easy to see the final product without seeing what goes on behind the scenes.
Guy summed up his achievements perfectly “It was never about the medals or the national records – it was all done purely to become February’s AD MOTM”.
