Limoncello has been around for over 100 years, although no one knows the exact origins of the Italian liqueur.

Shrouded in mystery with theories a-plenty, three separate towns: Sorrento, Amalfi and Capri alike claim its ancestry.

In small plots of barely kilometres, these three populations boast of the production of limoncello passed on from generation to generation. Even when there is no documented evidence outside of folklore of limoncello’s existence, it gradually made its way down to Naples, birthplace of Mario & Cinzia’s beautiful mum.

And now, all mystery aside, you’ll be glad to know you can luxuriate in the lavish lemony liqueur right here at Tattersalls, homemade by Nonna Della Corte herself.

The syrupy-sweet Italian liqueur is notoriously painstaking to make, requiring up to four weeks’ infusion time. It is imperative that the preparation is meticulous: if executed with accuracy, in a bit less than three months, the traditional yellow liquid will be ready to be enjoyed as an aperitif or a digestive, and ideally served very cold.

Maria, or as most Members know her ‘Nonna Della Corte,’ has made two bottles from a recipe handed down to her. I crossed my fingers and asked, but she didn’t divulge the recipe, not even to me – her son in law.

What I do know though, is that she has made this with love, and allowed time & patience to make sure the essential ingredients permeate the liqueur and give it its signature yellow colour.

Tattersalls currently has two bottles only for Members to enjoy, so you will need to get in quick before it all runs out! So here’s to a nod to an Italian classic: a refreshing, zingy drink perfect for sipping on a cold winter’s day.

Available in both the Members’ Dining Room and Members’ Bar for $10 a dram.
