Tuesday 8th March from 18:00

The Club has the privilege to exhibit Melanie Jai’s artwork for the whole month of March in the Members’ Dining Room in line with International Women’s Day.

This year’s theme for IWD is #BreakTheBias, and we will hear from two incredibly talented women who have used art to overcome adversity, facilitated by Member Lexi Airey.

Melanie will speak about her art and explain how whimsical childlike themes tell stories that are often kept behind closed doors, tackling and processing complex emotions in a lyrical way.

She is an artist, writer and the founder of the social initiative Paper Boat Project. Her paintings employ an arsenal of materials to aid her storytelling styled works, from acrylic to shellac, wood, metal, bitumen, paper, and found objects. These large scale pieces stem from a learnt necessity to rewind in order to move forward through trauma.

You will also have the opportunity to listen to Hani Abdile’s slam poetry. Hani was forced to leave her home country of Somalia and came to Australia seeking protection in 2014. During her 11 months in immigration detention, she found healing in poetry and developed a love for writing.

$50 person includes drinks and canapes, limited tickets available.
