On the same night that it was Mate vs Mate at Homebush- squash went one better with Club vs Club vs Club at Royal Sydney Golf Club in the penultimate round of the 2023/2024 iteration of the esteemed and delightfully named Golden Balls Cup. This tie involved teams from Royal Sydney Golf Club, Tattersalls Club and Killara Golf Club, with Uni & Schools having the bye.
The brave heroes in white representing our august institution were George “Dropbear” Doubler, Rob “The King” Keats, Nigel “Raptor” Robinson and Brian “The Ghost” Graham.
In front of a capacity crowd (most of whom were probably glad they hadn’t attended Homebush), the matches were hard fought and fierce contests, long enough to challenge even the most elite athletic body, but strategically shorted sufficiently not to miss the start of Origin. Former Tattersalls Club General Manager, Des Mulcahy, an interested but “torn” observer, when commenting upon the intensity of the play, may or may not have stated, “Geez, even Joey Sua’ali’i wouldn’t get sent off here.”
After the sporting component of the evening, the scores were added up over drinks, footy and dinner, with Tattersalls Club winning the evening with 6 matches won and one tie (6.5pts), Killara Golf Club 4.5 pts and Royal Sydney 1 point.
This means with one round to go, the Golden Balls table looks like:
Club | Points |
---|---|
Tattersalls Club | 8.5 points |
Uni & Schools | 7 points |
Killara Golf Club | 5.5 points |
Royal Sydney | 3 points |
It is all to play for on 31 July with the match at Killara Golf Club to decide the winner of the 2023/2024 Golden Ball Cup. May the best Club (named Tattersalls Club) win!!!!
Does squash ever sleep?? Not at Tattersalls Club, with the start of June, comes the commencement of the City Houses Squash competition, the largest sporting competition run in the CBD of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest city! So remember, if you want a competitive hit every week on either Tuesday- Wednesday or Thursday night contact the Athletic Department and we will fit you into a team!!!
Alternatively, join the internal squash competition at Tattersalls, the Club throughout the year runs the internal Heather McKay Shield and also the single evening (first to 7) comp – Michelle Martin Cup!
Again, if you feel like a hit, leave your name at the AD!!!
