Next Book Club Meeting on Tuesday 26 November at 17:30 at Level 1M – Administration Office

Lioness” by Emily Perkins (Recap from last 29 October) – By Member David Castle

As always, the Book Club had a most enjoyable night discussing Lioness by Emily Perkins, a novel written in 2023. The story concerns the implosion of an extended wealthy family in Wellington New Zealand. Written through the eyes of the second, and much younger wife, we are cleverly taken through internal family friction exacerbated by some demons from the past coming home to roost. The central protagonist transitions from a loving wife through experimentation with independence and final acceptance of a less privileged and supported role.

The book is well and cleverly written and the major characters clearly delineated. Most of us could accept the fundamental realities of the concept and appreciate the writing. To tell more of the story would act as a “spoiler”, since many of you would enjoy modern fiction of this nature.

Collectively we awarded the book 6/10 and some of our traditional 3-word summaries included “choices shaping women”, “girl tumbles down” and “when comfort collapses”.

The Book Club continues to go from strength to strength but we will always appreciate new members – with the opportunity to help choose our books for next year.

Deadly Secrets by Lynette Silver takes readers into the hidden world of World War II espionage, uncovering a tale of bravery, betrayal, and sacrifice. This meticulously researched book follows the “Z Special Unit,” an elite Allied special forces group tasked with high-risk, behind-enemy-lines missions across the Pacific. Silver’s gripping narrative, based on firsthand accounts and newly declassified documents, sheds light on the emotional and ethical challenges these operatives endured, highlighting their crucial role in altering the war’s course.

Excitingly, author Lynette Silver has agreed to introduce Deadly Secrets through a Zoom call on the night of the book club discussion, offering readers a unique opportunity to engage directly with her and dive deeper into the story behind the story.
