The meteoric rise of Athletic Director Malcolm Turnbull

Nearly four years ago, we welcomed a young enthusiastic new staff member to the Tattersalls Team.

By his own admission, Malcolm didn’t know the world of Private Clubs, and this was a whole new challenge for someone who had spent  over a decade in the personal training industry.

Bursting with raw energy and determination, Malcolm hit the ground running and created a range of changes that instantly improved the Athletic Department and its offerings.

One of the key changes was the networking with the other Athletic Directors from around the world.

In 2019, Tattersalls was officially welcomed into the North American Association of Club Athletic Directors (NACAD), in company such as NYAC, Los Angeles Athletic Club, Chicago Athletic Club, just to name a few.

Each year NACAD has a conference to celebrate its member Clubs, and offers an opportunity for leaders to meet and discuss ideas on how they can continually improve their offerings and service.

At the conclusion of each conference an award ceremony takes place to recognize the achievements of the past year.

The biggest and most prestigious award that is on offer is the International Athletic Director of the Year. The award is decided over multiple levels, firstly being a letter from the Club’s GM, secondly voted upon by the Executive NACAD Committee, and thirdly chosen by the previous year’s winner.

With this, we are pleased to announce that our very own Athletic Director Malcolm Turnbull has been awarded the 2022 International Athletic Director of the Year.

Malcolm’s level of care and service not only for Members, but also for his Team goes beyond the norms. He is always going the extra mile and has been a key cog in the Club’s successful navigation of the past two lockdowns.

Malcolm’s guidance and nurturing has seen the Athletic Department (AD) team thrive. He is constantly looking to improve the AD and is always at the forefront of any changes that are made.

A brief look back over the last four years and you can see why Malcolm took out this award. Whether it’s leading the Reclaim Sydney runs once the first lockdown ended, mapping and championing the the New York and Florence Marathon relocation plans, creating and implementing the 8 Week Challenge, winning the Tattersalls Club Team Member of the Year in 2020, taking ownership of Lane 5 Café, teaching online classes while recovering from wrist surgery, leading his Team through personal and professional development, or always pushing everyone – both Members and the Tattersalls’ Team to be their best.

So congratulations Malcolm, please join us in celebrating this amazing achievement.
