Book Club Backs Booker Prize Winner – The Promise Book Review
Most of our Members loved The Promise by Damon Galgut, the winner of the 2021 Booker prize. But that did not stop our usual lively debate, where every opinion is fully aired and appreciated.
Set in South Africa between 1986 and 2018, the book explores the decline and fall of a South African family against the backdrop of the end of apartheid and the failure of successive leaders to realize the promise of unity and greatness.
Most of us admired the way in this which the author brought the story and characters to life, utilizing the very best of modern techniques.
We awarded the book between 7 and 8/10 and in accordance with tradition the following “three” word summaries were supplied: –
- four funerals, no weddings
- promise eats family
- promise unfulfilled.
Our next book was also on the Booker prize shortlist: – The Fortune Men by Nadifa Mohamed. Please join us for an hour of stimulating discussion 17:30 Tuesday 30 August on Zoom.
Discussion points will be shared with the participating Members to make this event as insightful as possible.
