The next Book Club is Lola in the Mirror by Trent Dalton, Tuesday 27 February at 17:30.

A review first from member Ken Glover.

Tattersalls Book Club members this week reviewed in the club over wine and nibbles, the January offering, The Shipwreck by Sydney author Larry Writer. The Shipwreck is the true account of the Dunbar, which in 1857 was caught by a massive storm and wrecked on the rocks outside Sydney Heads. It resulted in the loss of 123 crew and passengers, with only one survivor. The story, masterfully told by the author, relates the personal stories of the crew and passengers, and the effect on the Sydney colony at that time.

Discussion and comments from the book club members covered all these points, with particular emphasis on the decision by the most experienced captain to enter Sydney Heads, in the midst of this storm. The book also covers the aftermath in the colony, with significant changes to Sydney Harbour navigation, and the better positioning of a new lighthouse on South Head.

The book was well received by the members, who all agreed it was a great read. Most members could only relate to knowledge of the Dunbar’s anchor currently displayed at South Head, not the full background.

Scores ranged from 6/10 to 8/10, and some of the comments.

“Disastrous Captains Decision “
“Storms Cruel Defeat “
“A Tragic Miscalculation “
“Dunbar Disaster Retold “
“Enlightening Masterfully Told “
“Young Sydney Tragedy”
