2021 began with an unusually cool weather pattern as a result of a ‘La Niña’ influence. But luckily a break of classic warm days and cool nights in January led to exceptional flavour development for one of our most popular grape varieties.
Tattersalls’ newly listed 2021 Briar Ridge ‘The Squire’ Chardonnay from Hunter Valley is sourced from vines grown on sandy loam soils in Mount View. Lying at an altitude of 130 – 180 metres, the vineyard benefits from slightly cooler temperatures than other areas of the Hunter.
For those who are not into overly oaked Chardonnays, then this subtle influence of oak provides structure and natural nectarine-like acids, is a great alternative, making this a fruit-driven Chardonnay. At the recent 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards, Briar Ridge was awarded a red star winery rating. This means they have held a 5-star rating for the previous three years.
