Founded in the same year as Tattersalls Club, Tyrrell’s Wines has long been the outspoken champion of aged shiraz and semillon. Now, however, it’s also one of Australia’s best chardonnays.

In the mid-1960s, former head of Tyrrell’s Wines Murray Tyrrell had a great love of white wines from Burgundy and set out looking for the best place to replicate its exceptional climate here in Australia.

While he did find this place just three miles from his home, the vineyard unfortunately belonged to Penfolds. Luckily, Murray was able to purchase the vineyard, marking the beginning of modern chardonnay in Hunter Valley.

Tattersalls has listed the extravagant 2006 Vat 47 Chardonnay on our Limited Cellar Release. The Vat 47 is Australia’s first commercially released chardonnay back in the 1970s when it was also the most awarded Australian white wine.

Built for ageing, some chardonnays tend to broaden out, however the integrity of this vineyard is very much Hunter Valley.

Notes of grapefruit, lemon and citrus, with a soft body and deep flavour; this will pair exceptionally well with our feature dish – the roasted chicken breast available from the Members’ Dining Room.
