It is with great sorrow that the Tattersalls Club announces the death of Sir James Hardy OBE, 1932 – 2023.

Sir James Hardy, the well-known yachtsman and vintner, died peacefully in Adelaide aged 90.

Hardy was for many years Chairman of the family company that produced some of the nation’s most popular wine brands. He was made an OBE in 1975 and knighted in 1981 for services to yachting and the community.

The three-time America’s Cup helmsman, Olympian, world champion and Admiral’s Cup winner embodied the Corinthian ideals of yachting during a time when sailors from ‘Down Under’ were prominent and popular at the world’s major events.

Sir James served on the boards and councils of many public institutions and charities. He is survived by his wife Joan, brother David, sister Pamela, and sons David and Richard.

There will be a private funeral in Adelaide and a memorial service at a later time.
